Appogee Goals: Glossary

Appogee Goals has currently been released to early adopters, please get in touch if you're interested in finding out more.

OKRObjectives and Key Results (OKR) is the underlying framework supported by Appogee Goals.  It is for defining and tracking objectives (Goals) and their outcomes. The Objective is the clearly-defined goal, while the Key Results are the specific benchmarks to ensure achievement of that goal are "measurable and verifiable".  The OKR framework aims to define company and team Objectives along with linked and measurable Key Results to provide a critical thinking framework and ongoing discipline that seeks to ensure employees work together, focusing their efforts to make measurable contributions.
ObjectiveAn Objective is what you want to achieve. It should be short, easy to understand and easily memorable. They shouldn't include metrics or numbers as these will be covered within the Key Results.
Key Result        Key Results are how you determine if you have achieved your Goal and potentially your progress towards its completion.  There are usually up to 5 Key Results for any given Objective, each of which should include metrics and timescales that clarify what it means to achieve your Goal.  Key Results do not describe how a Goal is to be achieved.
GoalWithin Appogee Goals, all Objectives are referred to as Goals.
Company GoalCompany Goals may stand alone or may align to other Company Goals. The visibility of a Company Goal will be the same for all staff unless restrictive visibility is set up in the Goal definition screen.
Team GoalTeam Goals will align to Company Goals but they may also align to other Team Goals.  All members of the Team will share the Team Goals unless restrictive visibility is set up in the Goal definition screens.
Personal GoalPersonal Goals will often align to a Team but they may also align to another Personal Goal.  Personal Goals may have assigned Collaborators who share the Key Results associated with the Goal.
Goal AlignmentAlignment is a view available from My Goals and All Goals and shows how the various Goals align with each other.  Alignment view shows how Goals align to those of their colleagues. Goals do not cascade through an organisation, but rather they should align with another Goal so they collectively support each other.
Shout-outA Shout-out is feedback provided to an employee.  Who can provide a Shout-out on a Goal is configured as part of the Goal itself.  Shout-outs are useful when reviewing employee performance but do not directly impact Progress on either a Key Result or a Goal.
Check-inProvide a status update of a Goal by submitting a Check-in. Only users with an Editor or Check-in role can have access to do this.
TaskTasks are associated with Goals which define steps to be taken to achieve a Key Result.  They are often short term and temporary in nature.
StatusThere are two types of Goals Status - Approval and Completion.
A Goal will be in an Approval status during the creation of the Goal, these can be any of the following: Draft, Pending Approval, Rejected, Future, Current and Expired.
Draft - Goal has been created but not submitted for Approval
Pending Approval - Goal has been submitted for Approval and is waiting for Approval from one or more Approvers
Rejected - The Goal has been rejected by one or more of the Approvers
Future - The Goal has been approved and is awaiting a start date
Current - The timeframe for this Goal has started
Expired - The timeframe for this Goal has finished

Any Goals that hold the status of Current, can also have a Completion Status, which can be any of the following: Not Started, On Track, Blocked, At Risk and Achieved.
Not Started - No activity has been reported for this Goal
On Track - Key Results have been updated appropriately and there is nothing to indicate the Key Results will not be met in their target timeframe.
Blocked - The Goal cannot be achieved due to one or more external factors.  There will be no further progress reported against this Goal.
At Risk - Effort has been expended on this Goal and Key Results updated but it does not appear that one or more Key Results will be achieved at all or within the timeframe allowed.  This status should indicate Tasks have been added to improve progress or amend the Key Result metrics.
Achieved - The Key Results for this Goal have all been achieved or exceeded.   It is unlikely further updates will be made against this Goal although it is possible, in which case consideration should be given to revising the metrics associated with the Key Results.
ProgressProgress on each Key Result is shown on the Goals detail screen, and these are collated together to provide a Progress score for the overall Goal.  Updates are made to Key Results which change their Progress score. The Status of a Goal is not directly associated with the Progress score for a Goal but are set manually by editing the Status value for the Goal.
TimelineThe Timeline that shows on a Goals detail screen lists all updates to a Goal which are listed in chronological order and include all changes to Progress, comment updates and Shout-outs .  They can be filtered by type of comment, and with appropriate permissions can show the history of the Goal back through its drafting.
CollaboratorEveryone with whom a Goal is shared.
ShareThe Goal detail screen provides a Share button to control who has what access to a Goal.  Available roles are Reader, Editor and Check-in.
